Tinker’s Hole, Erraid

56°17.468’ N, 6°23.061’ W, 24.05.2019

South by south-west
From Staffa
Weather worsening
Our course
Takes us on through
The minimally-buoyed shallows
And shifting sands
Of yew’d
Iona,
Heartland
Of the Islands of the Viking South
Suðreyjar
Later
Rìoghachd nan Eilean
Kingdom of the Isles
Then on
Prow to prow
In a race
For the last wind-protected
Anchor drop
Between
Erraid
And the Black Isle
Of Eilean Dubh.
We give it our best shot
And take the short cut
Threading through the rocks
Antares-guided
To win the prize:
The sweetest
Through-tide anchorage
Embraced
In the chambered
Pink granite crevice
Of Tinker’s Hole
With its folded hills
And slopes heavy with
Fern and tick-bearing
Heather.
We follow sheep tracks
And inklings
To sudden white sands
And a hilltop cairn
Dedicated
To a man
Swept out to sea.
